Sirius Pure Icelandic Chocolate 70%: We found this bar in Whole Foods - according to Slashfood, Whole Foods is now stocking several Icelandic products. I've never seen Sirius before, and have never heard of any other pure chocolate that's made in Iceland. It's been around for more than a hundred years, with the same packaging since 1933 - two bars placed back to back wrapped in wax paper with a thin paper wraparound.
This bar opened with a cacao flavor that tasted a bit burnt to me, then eased into a somewhat more pleasant flavor of burnt toffee. The chocolate is strong with a boldness that strikes almost immediately after it hits the tongue. After the initial tug, it tones down a bit with more subtle notes of almonds and brandy. Not a whole lot of subtlety here, but a very interesting bar overall.
